Att bry sig om andra
Människan står sig själv närmast men är inte totalt egoistisk. Så skulle jag sammanfatta Adam Smiths syn, såsom den kommer till utryck i The Theory of Moral Sentiments.
Om att stå sig själv närmast (III.1.45):
In the same manner, to the selfish and original passions of human nature, the loss or gain of a very small interest of our own, appears to be of vastly more importance, excites a much more passionate joy or sorrow, a much more ardent desire or aversion, than the greatest concern of another with whom we have no particular connexion.”
Och om att människan har visst intresse för andras välmående (I.1.1):
How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it except the pleasure of seeing it.”
Hade vi t.ex. brytt oss om tsunamioffren om de inte i så hög grad hade varit från Sverige? Men att vi brydde oss, det står helt klart.
