Hur påverkar pengar oss människor? En artikel i Science ger detta svar:

The results of nine experiments suggest that money brings about a self-sufficient orientation in which people prefer to be free of dependency and dependents. Reminders of money, relative to nonmoney reminders, led to reduced requests for help and reduced helpfulness toward others. Relative to participants primed with neutral concepts, participants primed with money preferred to play alone, work alone, and put more physical distance between themselves and a new acquaintance.

Dvs. när människor påminns om pengar blir de mer individualistiska och mindre samarbetsvilliga. Hur kan det förklaras? Peter Singer kommenterar:

Vohs and her colleagues suggest that as societies began to use money, the necessity of relying on family and friends diminished, and people were able to become more self-sufficient. “In this way,” they conclude, “money enhanced individualism but diminished communal motivations, an effect that is still apparent in people’s responses today.”

De flesta ser nog denna effekt av pengar som något negativt, även om de i allmänhet ändå godtar pengar pga. deras fördelar, som torde överväga. Men jag ser snarast effekten som en ytterligare fördel! Jag har starkt atomistiska drag och vill inte vara bunden till andra människor. Pengar ger möjlighet till distans, vilket jag värdesätter.
